Abstract

Pharmaceutical compositions for tropical application comprise between 0.001% and 0.2% w/w. of fluocinolone acetonide and/or the 21-acetate thereof, and between 0.5% and 10% w/w. of dimethyl sulphoxide, and an organic carrier therefor which is imiscible with the solution of fluocinolone or its acetate in dimethyl sulphoxide. Suitable carriers are soft paraffin, vegetable or animal triglycerides, long chain aliphatic acids or alcohols, and hydrogenated triglycerides, preferably together with an emulsifier such as wool fat or alcohols derived therefrom, hydrogenated lanolin or cholesteral. The compositions take the form of ointments, and may contain other excipients.
