Abstract

1,080,448. Surgical specula. MONARCH MOULDING Inc. Dec. 30, 1964 [Jan. 20, 1964], No. 52781/64. Heading A5R. A disposable vaginal speculum of plastics material comprises a part 22 including a dilatory blade 50 and a handle 56, and a part 20 including a blade 24 and a lever part 34, 36, the two parts 20, 22 being pivoted together so that the separation between the ends of the blades is adjustable, and the pivot pins being selectively positioned in three bearings 68, 70 so that the separation between the blades at the pivot is also adjustable. A ratchet member 44 on the lever part locks into the handle 56 and when locked with the blades 24. 50 separated at their ends, also prevents adjustment of the pivot pins. The speculum is also provided with a lip 97 at the end of the blade 50, with two depending teeth at the end 98 of the blade 24, and with a thumb grip 40. In use, the body being examined is observed through the opening 26.
