Abstract
An aqueous textile adhesive comprises a blend of (A) a latex containing a copolymer of at least two polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers selected from styrene and monomers copolymerizable with styrene, from 0.5-10% of the monomers having at least one substituent carboxyl or carboxylate group and (B) 0.3-5% (based on the dry latex copolymer) of a water-soluble adduct of an epihalohydrin and a polyamide of general formula -NH-(CnH2nHN)y-CORCO-where n is 2-4, y is 2-8 and R is a C1- 8 divalent, non-aromatic organic radical. The copolymer may be derived from styrene, 1,3-butadiene, acrylic acid and fumaric acid; ethyl acrylate, acrylic acid and n-butyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate; and styrene and acrylic acid with either 1,3-butadiene and methacrylic acid or n-butyl acrylate and acrylonitrile. The polyamide may be prepared by reacting a dicarboxylic acid, e.g. adipic, with a polyalkylene polyamine, e.g. diethylenetriamine and the adduct prepared by treating this with epichlorohydrin. The adhesive may also contain calcium carbonate and polyacrylic acid or its sodium salt.
