Abstract
An explosive composition comprises a mixture of a minor proportion of a high explosive, a greater proportion of a perchlorate of boran or of a metal having a valency of at least two, and a major proportion of particulate aluminium. The explosive has a low stable detonation rate and produces only small amounts of gaseous reaction products; it is used for simulating the damage caused by radioactivity excursions on models of nuclear reactor containment components. The high explosive may be PETN, HMX, RDX, or tetryl. Suitable perchlorates are those of Ca, Mg, and Ba. The aluminium is preferably in leaf, flake, or platelet form. The finely divided components are mixed at 140 DEG F. under vacuum and filled into a metal tube (see Division F3). The performance of the explosive is compared with explosives comprising (a) PETN, (b) PETN, Al, and BaO2, and (c) PETN, Al, and KClO4.
