Abstract
A fluxless arc welding electrode for use without flux or gas shielding containing 0.4-2.4% Mn and 0.1-1% Si and comprising a ferrous wire strip or tube and containing as ingredients of or a coating on the wire or strip or as a core within the tube in proportions by weight of the electrode:- a) 0.1-4% rare earth metal e.g. Ce, La, or 0.1-4% Ni or 0.1-0.6% Nb b) 0.4-25% Mg and c) a strong deoxidizer, e.g. Al, Zr or Ti, in an amount of 0.2-5% when in the core or 0.2-8% when in the wire strip or coating thereon. The electrode may also include alloying ingredients e.g. Cr, Mo, V. A mild steel, rimming steel or low alloy steel strip or wire may be coated with a coating including ingredients (a), (b), (c) by the following methods:- 1) by passing the wire or strip through a bath of molten coating metal in an atmosphere of inert or reducing gas e.g. hydrogen, the coating metal being 30-95% Al, 4-25% Mg, 1-2% Ce, 0-1% La, 0-1% Ca, 0.1-25% Si, 0-10% Mn, 0-15% Ti, 0-10% Zr, 0-20% Fe. The metals may be supplied to the bath as compounds or alloys e.g. Al-10% Si, Al-10% Mg; Al-50% Ti; 45% Si 8% Mg 47% Fe 0.5% Ce. 2) by heating the wire or strip at 600 DEG C. for five minutes in the following mixture 20-50% Al2O3 0.5-4% NH4Cl, 20-65% Al, 3-20% Mg, 1-2% Ce, 0-1% La, 0-1% Ca, 0.1-17% Si, 0-8% Mn, 0-12% Ti, 0-8% Zr, 0-15% Fe. 3) by electrophoretic deposition from a suspension of powdered coating metal in liquid followed by rolling and sintering. 4) by drawing a wire coated with colloidal aluminium hydroxide through powdered coating metal followed by rolling and sintering. 5) by forming the coating metals into a sintered billet and extruding this billet round a wire or strip. 6) by applying a mixture of the following compositions to the wire or strip using an adhesive and fusing in a furnace in an inert atmosphere:- .Ce.-.2% .Ni.2%.- .Mg.40%.40% .Al.20%.- .Ti.-.15% .Zr.-.5% .Mn.20%.20% .Si.10%.10% .Fe.8%.8%
