Abstract
A saturated hydrocarbon or hydrocarbons containing 10 to 30 carbon atoms, is/are separated from a mixture containing one or more saturated hydrocarbons containing 10 to 30 carbon atoms, one or more mono sulphonic acids containing 10 to 30 carbon atoms and a minor proportion of one or more disulphonic acids containing 10 to 30 carbon atoms by treating the mixture with liquid sulphur dioxide to dissolve the non-hydrocarbon component or components of the mixture and separating the SO2 phase from the hydrocarbon phase. The mixture may be obtained by the sulphoxidation of one or more saturated hydrocarbons, e.g. in the presence of g -radiation and may also contain a minor proportion of water and/or sulphuric acid.ALSO:A mixture containing one or more saturated hydrocarbons containing 10 to 30 carbon atoms, one or more monosulphonic acids containing 10 to 30 carbon atoms and a minor proportion of one or more disulphonic acids containing 10 to 30 carbon atoms is separated into a hydrocarbon component and a non-hydrocarbon component by treating it with liquid sulphur dioxide to dissolve the non-hydrocarbon component and separating the sulphur dioxide phase from the hydrocarbon phase. The mixture may be obtained by the sulphoxidation of one or more saturated hydrocarbons, e.g. in the presence of g -radiation and may also contain a minor proportion of water and/or sulphuric acid.
