Abstract
Mercaptans are removed from hydrocarbon-containing gases by oxidizing at below 50 DEG C. to convert mercaptans to disulphides and contacting the resultant gas with a non-impregnated solid adsorbent. The gas may be a hydrocarbon, e.g. butane, or a cracking gas, refinery gas, natural gas, or fuel or town gas and may contain inert gases. The oxidation is effected (a) by contact with an adsorbent such as activated charcoal impregnated with an oxidant, e.g. pyrogallol, hydroquinone, n-butyro-pyrogallol, anthragallol, gallic acid, tannic acid, 3,4-dioxydiphenol, 2,5-dioxydiphenol or butylpyrogallol and an inorganic or organic base. The oxidant can be regenerated after reduction by contact with air or (b) by reaction with 0.1-0.5% by volume (based on hydrocarbon) of oxygen or ozone calculated as oxygen. With oxygen a catalyst is also present on an adsorbent, e.g. a chloride, bromide, nitrate, or sulphate of Al, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni or Zn on activated carbon. Ozone requires no catalyst but should not be used if olefins are present and the formation of ozonides is to be avoided. The adsorbent in the second stage is preferably activated carbon or may be pumice, bog iron ore, bauxite or granular coke from lignite. It may be regenerated by contact with steam, the disulphides being separated and recovered from the effluent.
