Abstract

A disposable diaper comprises an absorbent layer 22, a co-extensive facing sheet 21 and optionally a waterproof backing sheet 23, longitudinal margins being folded inwards at 25, 26 and secured to the body of the diaper at points 27, 28 spaced inwardly of the edges 24 to leave strips which may be further folded outwardly. For instance, the further folds may be parallel with the first folds, diverge towards one or both ends of the diaper to form a diaper wider at the end(s) than at the middle or diverge towards one end and converge towards the other. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 8 not shown, the first folded portions secured to the body of the diaper are folded back underneath the diaper. The securing means may be adhesive, two-sided adhesive tape, or, if the facing sheet includes thermoplastic fibres, by the application of heat and pressure.
