Abstract
Chlorofluoromethanes are made by reacting chlorine, methane and hydrogen fluoride in at least one catalysis zone at 200-500 DEG C. at super-atmospheric pressure, passing the reaction products while still at superatmospheric pressure to a distillation column and separating the products by distillation. Preferred operating pressures are in the range 2-15 kg./cm.2. It is preferred to recycle a mixture of chlorinated, fluorinated and/or chlorofluorinated hydrocarbon intermediates recovered from the foot of the distillation column. Conventional halogenation catalysts are used, e.g. active carbon, fluorinated alumina. Examples relate to the preparation of reaction mixtures containing CF3Cl, CF2Cl2, CFCl3 and CCl4.
