Friction materials used in a composite brake shoe or pad (see Division F2) comprise, by weight: .(a).Asbestos fibre ...45-50 parts ..Barytes .. ...15-20 parts ..CNSL dust .. ...15-20 parts ..Copper powder ...5-10 parts ..Carbon black ...0.5-2 parts .CNSL.modified phenolic resin.15-20 parts (CNSL means cashew nut shell liquid polymer hardened by aldehyde); and .(b).Asbestos fibre ...48-50 parts ..Barytes .. ...15-20 parts ..Green chromium oxide.0- 5 parts ..Ferric oxide .. ...0- 5 parts ..Copper powder ...10-15 parts ..Carbon black ...0.5- 2 parts ..Phenolic binder resin.10-15 parts Both materials are made by mixing the constituents, forming to the desired shape, curing by heat and pressure in a mould and oven baking for several hours. The parts thus formed may then be moulded into a single composite pad.
