Abstract
<PICT:1078271/C1/1> An edge roll for engaging a margin of a ribbon of glass as it is advanced along a bath of molten metal comprises a barrel 1 of heat resistant metal adapted to project through the side of the bath and carrying at one end a ferrule 8 of high melting point material for engaging the glass, the ferrule 8 being keyed to the barrel 1 by a longitudinally extending key 11 fitted with co-operating keyways 7, 10 formed in the barrel 1 and the internal surface of the ferrule 8. The roll is particularly for the lower roll of the pairs of edge rolls described in Specification 1,010,913 which is immersed in the molten metal. The rod-like barrel 1 of heat resistant steel has at its outer end, externally of the bath, a threaded part 3 for connection to driving means and the inner end has a part 5 of lesser diameter over which the ferrule 8 is secured by the key 11 in a keyway formed by overlying keyways 7, 10 in the part 5 and ferrule 8, the key 11 being held in position by a T-shaped retaining piece 14 extending in an annular groove 12 in the ferrule 8 with its stem 13 secured to the barrel part 5 by a grub screw 15. The ferrule 8 is of material which is not wettable by the glass, preferably of carbon in the form of graphite or of boron nitride or of spheroidal graphite cast iron with a coating of tungsten carbide or titanium carbide or with a layer of chromium diffused into the outer surface of the cast iron. The retaining piece 14 is of spheroidal graphite cast iron. The barrel 1 and extension 5 are preferably formed with a central bore 6 through which cooling fluid is circulated to cool the ferrule 8.
