Abstract
Paper-making apparatus of the type wherein paper stock is introduced between an upper and lower belt, has on the inside of at least one belt in the forming zone a stationary, permeable surface bearing on the belt to cause the belts to converge. As described there is a surface on the inside of each belt, each surface being formed by a plurality of spaced parallel blades of stainless steel or of fabric or paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resin. The blades which extend at a slight angle to the machine direction are mounted on an impervious support arranged so that the depth of the blades between the support and belt increases in the downstream direction to allow an increase of area between the blades to accommodate the white water from the stock. In one embodiment immediately downstream of the blades a suction box and scoop are respectively arranged below and above the belts. In a second embodiment the belts in the forming zone extend slightly downwardly, and a turning roll, which may be a suction roll, is provided between the blades, and the suction roll and scoop. The roll has an open or cellular surface sufficient to hold all the water expressed through the top belt in the forming zone. The breast rolls may either be positioned opposite to, or longitudinally displace from, one another.
