Well apparatus in series below a string of tubing comprises a packer to pack off the annular space between the string and the well bore and includes a tubular member having porting for the flow of well fluid, the flow being controlled by a change of downward pressure in a control fluid within the string. The apparatus is carried by the string 10 and comprises a tubular member 17 having ports 32, 37, the packer 24 housed in the member, and slips 73 actuated by the pressure of fluid in the string below the apparatus to hold the apparatus against downward movement in the casing 12 and to set the packer against the casing. A first stream of production fluid flowing outside the string takes the path indicated by the arrows 85 to bypass the packer, whilst on a second stream of production fluid passes up the interior of the string passing outside a plug valve 44 as indicated by the arrows 86. A valve at the wellhead controlling flow through the string is opened to cause the valve 44 to lift and stop flow through the string and at the same time raise a valve sleeve 38 to stop flow outside the string. The valves are opened by pumping fluid down the string. In a modification (Fig. 4 not shown) the production fluid from the inner string is diverted through ports 118, 103 into a string 105 surrounding the inner string 100, the flow through these ports being controlled by a plug valve 109 which is subjected to downward pressure by control fluid in the string 100 above the valve 109 and to upward pressure from the production fluid in the string 100 below the valve 109. The ports are opened by applying downward pressure to the control fluid, and closed by removing such pressure. In a further modification (Fig. 8 not shown) the valve controlling the by-pass around the packer is actuated by the internal pressure of production fluid in the string below the valve and then pressure of control fluid in the string, above the valve.
