Abstract

A method of manufacturing a rubber composition comprises forming a solution of a rubber in an organic solvent therefor, adding a reinforcing filler in the dry unpelletized form to the solution of the rubber and mixing the solution of the rubber with the reinforcing filler with a high degree of shear (defined as that the work done on the mixture is at the rate of at least 9 watts until the total work done on the mixture is at least 7.5 joules/c.c. of the mixture). The rubbers may either be dissolved in the solvent or a solution of a rubber formed by solution polymerization may be used. The exemplified filler is carbon black. Mixtures of rubbers may be used. Vulcanizing agents may be added.
