Abstract

1,077,145. Refrigerating; liquefied gas containers. V. E. KEILIN. Oct. 9, 1964, No. 41414/64. Headings F4H and F4P. A cryostat comprises a container 1 for liquefied gas, e.g. liquid helium, an external case 2 having a cover 3, and coaxial cylindrical heat shields 6, 7 between container 1 and casing 2, the upper ends of container 1 and shield 6 being connected and the lower end of shield 6 being connected to the lower end of shield 7. The upper end of the latter is connected to the casing at 8 and a cylindrical insert 13 depending from cover 3 is disposed between shields 6, 7, the arrangement being such that helium vapour flows downwardly between shield 6 and insert 13 then upwardly between insert 13 and shield 7 for discharge through an outlet 5 in cover 3. Insert 13 may be double-walled and have its interior evacuated. The space between casing 2 and shield 7 is evacuated through a valved port 11 and a further heat shield 9 surrounds the lower end of container 1, an absorbent 12 being attached to the bottom of container 1 to maintain a high vacuum during operation. A liquid nitrogen container may be located in the space between the liquid surface in container 1 and the cover 3 for pre-cooling the container and for cooling additional heat shields which may be mounted between container 1 and shield 6. Shields 6, 7 and insert 13 are made of stainless steel and shield 9 of copper.
