Abstract

1,076,625. Printing apparatus. RESEARCH LABORATORIES OF AUSTRALIA PTY. Ltd. Nov. 18, 1964 [Nov. 19, 1963], No. 47033/64. Heading B6C. In an electrostatic printing machine using liquid developer containing toner particles, the latter is retained on the master such that at the transfer or printing station the receiving web or copy material is not in direct contact with the master, transfer of the image thereon being effected by an electric field acting through the developer liquid. In the apparatus shown, a cylinder mounted master 2 of photo-conductive material imaged with electrical insulating material and electrostatically charged at the transfer station is subjected to a light source 19 to de-energize the non-image areas prior to passing over a developer bath 11 in which three driven earthed rollers 7, 8, 9 apply liquid developer to the imaged areas. The rollers 7 and 8 do not touch the master 2 but are spaced therefrom leaving gaps 13 and 14 respectively. The transfer station comprising a spring-loaded web receiving roller 4 is located adjacent the developer bath 11 such that the master is still covered with liquid developer to a thickness sufficient to bridge the gap 17 between the roller 4 and the master cylinder 1. A voltage is applied across this gap to simultaneously transfer the image from the master on to the web 6 and re-charge the master prior to its subsequent use. A small electrical bias is applied at the developer station to prevent particles in the developer liquid from contacting the non-image areas. The roller 4 may be placed near the cylinder 1 within the 60 degree arc shown in Fig. 1. Both the cylinder 1 and roller 4 are belt-driven from a common source, the belts driving the cylinder being at each end and contacting the roller 4 such that the space 17 is in effect ordained by the thickness of the belts.
