Abstract
1,076,459. Rotary engines. H.L. CHAMBAUT. May 6, 1965 [May 6, 1964; April 26. 1965]. No.19207/65. Heading F1F. A rotary engine of the movable-abutment type comprises a cylindrical rotor g, Fig. 1, having one or more (two shown) arcuate recesses in the rotor circumference forming with the centre casing a and end flanges s thrust chambers r and a plurality of rotary (six shown) abutments v which through gearing (n), (o), (p), Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) rotate in timed sequence with the rotor in the same direction. Pressure fluid is admitted to each chamber through an axial-rotor passage h and radial rotor passages l to act on rotor faces b to drive an output shaft (3) and exhausts through rotor passages i, openings j and apertures in end flanges (s) of the casing. During rotation the pressure fluid bears for part of the time on two abutments, the pressure automatically decreasing on the leading, i.e., downstream abutment in the rotational direction of the rotor and increasing on the upstream abutment. A fan (u) driven by the shaft (3) cools the casing and the cooling medium, e.g., air passes through passages (x) and t to cool the rotor. The rotor is shown in other embodiments having two recesses with eight engaging abutments, three equally spaced recesses with five abutments and one recess with three abutments. In another embodiment each abutment V is connected by a crank-arm to its gear O so that instead of rotating the abutment V oscillates. Several such engines may be coupled together.
