Abstract
107,616. Lee, F. June 6, 1916. Drawings to Specification. Magnetic compasses.-Relates to the pivoting of instruments subjected to vibration, for example compasses employed on aircraft. According to the invention, a polished stone pivot and bearing, for example a cup, are employed, the polish being such that roughness, if present, is only visible under a magnification of 25 diameters or more. The stone is such as is used for jewelled bearings, for example sapphire, agate, ruby or diamond, and may be a synthetic stone. The pivot is preferably conical with slightly curved sides and having an angle at its apex of between 56 and 70 degrees, the point being slightly rounded off. According to Provisional Specification 8026/16, a steel or other metallic cup may be used.
