Abstract

1,075,419. Automatic control of current and voltage. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 30, 1966 [March 30, 1965], No. 13999/66. Heading G3R. In a voltage regulator of the series transistor type, the impedance of regulating transistors Q1 Q4, connected as a Darlington pair, is controlled by a negative feedback loop including Zener diode Z and transistors Q3, Q2, Q5 so that the output voltage is maintained constant up to a predetermined value of load current, Q5 being saturated. If the current increases further the output of voltage drops sharply causing Q2 to saturate and limit the current through Q1; the regulator then supplies a constant current and there is no feedback round the loop. A still further decrease in load resistance causes a further fall in voltage so that Q5 is lifted out of saturation reducing the drive to Q1, Q4 so that the output voltage falls rapidly to zero because of the positive feedback now provided. The output voltage is set by adjustment of potentiometer R4, and the short circuit current is determined by resistor R10 which is connected in series with an overload alarm lamp L across transistor Q1. A reset switch S is provided so that normal operating conditions can be restored when the overload is removed. A modified arrangement, using one transistor instead of the Darlington pair, is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown).
