Abstract
A dry, cementitious composition for making into a paint, mortar, adhesive or grouting by adding water, of the kind in which cement particles are coated with a long chain fatty acid, e.g. stearic acid, or with a metal salt thereof, and/or are mixed with a dry, powdered, water-soluble organic polymeric binder, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, contains up to 5% b.w. of the cement of an organic bridge solvent which has a B.P. of not more than 240 DEG C. to improve the wettability of the composition. A bridge solvent is wholly or partly miscible with water and is a mutual solvent for organic and aqueous phases. Examples are aliphatic alcohols with one or more ethereal oxygen and/or carbonyl groups (examples given); esters thereof (example given); aliphatic ketones, e.g. acetone; and alicyclic alcohols and ketones, e.g. (methyl) cyclohexanone and methyl cyclohexanol, and preferred proportions are: 0.25 to 2.5% for paints, 1 to 4% for grouting and adhesives, and 1 to 2.5% for mortars. If the polymeric binder is present, the composition preferably includes a C12 to C18 aliphatic alcohol, e.g. lauryl alcohol, or a C12 to C18 aliphatic primary monoamine, e.g. dodecylamine, and for mortars and grouts a spray-dried vinyl homo- or copolymer powder which is redispersible in water or alkali is included. The procedure for making up the composition, which includes pigment, filler, and calcium chloride setting accelerator, is described, and specific examples of compositions for the different uses are given.
