Abstract
1,075,376. Gas filter. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. July 29, 1965 [Sept. 21, 1964], No. 38512/ 64. Heading BIT. A gas filter element 1 comprises a layer of polyurethane foam 2 having on its inlet side irregularities to increase the surface area and on its outlet side a thinner filtering layer 4 of finer porosity. The irregularities may be angular or curved corrugations or pyramidal formations, and the layer 4 may be felted, knitted or woven fabric or filter paper. Two layers 2 may be cut from a single block of foam material using a corrugated knife or a heated wire (Fig. 2, not shown). Layer 2 may be impregnated with mineral oil. Figure 5 shows a I.C. engine carburettor intake filter, in which the filter element 1 is supported on a wire gauze 6 and clamped at its periphery between the two parts 7, 8 of the housing. In Figure 6 (not shown) the filter element is of tubular form and supported by an internal wire gauze member (11), and the ends of the element are sealed either by gaskets 12 secured to the element by adhesive or else the ends of the element are folded outwardly over the gauze support (1) (Fig. 7, not shown) and compressed by clamping. Densities and porosities of foam 2 and thickness of layer 4 are given.
