Abstract
1,075,152. Photo-electric inspection apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 17, 1964 [Jan. 21, 1963], No. 2495/63. Heading G1A. Apparatus for inspecting transparent or translucent containers comprises a conveyer bringing the containers to an inspection station, means for rotating the containers, means passing at least one beam of light through the containers in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the container and a plurality of detectors for said light. Bottles 2, Fig. 2, on a conveyer 1 are carried by a pocket wheel 3 through inspection stations A, B, C and D and rotated by contact with a friction strip 4. At stations A and C the bottles are inspected by 16 vertically spaced light beams from an elongated source 17 to separate photo-resistors 21 or 62. At stations B and D the bottles are inspected by a beam of light passing upwards through their bottoms. If a defect in the bottle such as dirt or a flaw is detected at any of the stations A, B, C, or D a corresponding solenoid 35, 60, 63 or 64 Fig.4, is energized to pull out a rod 39 on a timing wheel rotating with wheel 3 corresponding to the defective bottle. When such a pulled out rod reaches the switch 65, a pin 41 operates the switch energizing a solenoid 5, Fig. 2, which retains the defective bottle on the pocket wheel to be delivered to a refect conveyer 9. If no fault is detected, 5 is not energized and the bottle returns to conveyer 1. A photo-electric synchronizing-pulse generator, Fig.3 (not shown) is coupled to the wheel 16 and emits pulses which are used to gate the output of the photo-resistors to ensure that defects are only recorded when the bottles are at the inspection stations.
