Abstract

A process of protecting vegetation from fungal diseases comprises treating the vegetation with a 3-substituted-4-ylidene-isoxazol-5-one alone, in admixture with a solid diluent, or in admixture with a liquid diluent containing a wetting agent. Especially good results are stated to have been obtained with 4-benzylidene-3-methylisoxazol-5-one, 4-p-chlorobenzylidene-3-methylisoxazol-5-one, 4-p-dimethylaminobenzylidene-3-methylisoxazol-5-one, 4-benzylidene-3-p-chlorophenylisoxazol-5-one and 4-furfurylidene-3-methylisoxazol-5-one, but many other compounds of the stated class are mentioned. Suitable solid diluents include powdered kaolin, fullers earth, gypsum, chalk, Hewitt's earth and china clay. Suitable liquid diluents are water, organic solvents or aqueous organic solvents (e.g. benzene, methanol, ethanol or acetone), while suitable wetting agents are ethylene oxide condensation products, sulphonates and glue. In the examples, the treatment of wheat seeds and tomato and cucumber plants is described.
