Abstract

<PICT:1074776/C6-C7/1> Discrete particles of an alkaline earth metal oxide or carbonate are coated with at least one of the metals Ni, W, Mo, Co, for use in thermionic cathodes. In particular, coprecipitated bariumstrontium oxide, ball-milled to a maximum particle size of 37 m , may be coated with nickel in a fluidized bed system. As shown, a stream of hydrogen, nitrogen or argon, saturated with carbonyl nickel derived from bubbles 20, is passed through fluidization column 11 which is heated to 100 DEG C. for 20 hours. The coated particles may contain 14% by weight nickel and 86% oxide. Alternatively, a stream of hydrogen containing carbonyl nickel vapour may be passed through a suspension of barium-strontium carbonate powder in amyl acetate, which is agitated by a magnetic stirrer and maintained at 80 - 90 DEG C. for 22 hours by an oil bath, Fig. 2 (not shown).
