Abstract
The invention comprises merocyanine dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:1074433/C4-C5/1> wherein R1 is alkyl or aralkyl, R2 to R6 inclusive are each hydrogen, alkyl or aryl and D is the residue of the ketomethylene nucleus and wherein the aryl groups may be substituted. The dyes are made by (a) reacting a compound of the Formula II <FORM:1074433/C4-C5/2> wherein X is an anion, with a compound of the Formula III <FORM:1074433/C4-C5/3> where R is alkyl; (b) reacting a compound of II with a compound of the Formula IV <FORM:1074433/C4-C5/4> and an orthoester of Formula R6-C(OR)3, where R is alkyl; or (c) reacting a compound of Formula IV with a compound of Formula V <FORM:1074433/C4-C5/5> where Q is alkythio, anilino or acetanilido. The residue D may complete a rhodanine, thiohydantoin, thiobarbituric acid and 2-thio-2:4 oxazolidinedione. The dyes sensitize silver halide emulsions.
