A tower crane, Fig. 1 (not shown), has a strut 3 which holds the tower in an upright position and when disconnected from the tower is used to load and unload ballast 13 from the base 2 of the crane. The strut luffs, about a sector 20 to move the ballast horizontally, the extent of lulling being limited by a slot. The load is raised by a rope 17 and winch 5 and luffed by a rope 12 and winch 4.
