Abstract

The invention comprises (a) ketone peroxide compositions which are free of polymerizable material and comprise a solution of a ketone peroxide, derived from an acyclic ketone having 3 to 8 carbon atoms or an alicyclic ketone having 3 to 6 carbon atoms in the ring, in such an amount of a hydrophilic solvent which is an "alkylene glycol," an ethylene or diethylene glycol monoalkyl ether, a C2- 12 alkanol, a cycloalkanol having 3 to 6 carbon atoms in the ring, a cyclic ether substituted alcohol, or a cyclic amide or more than one such solvent, that the composition is "safe," and (b) ketone peroxide compositions which are free of polymerizable material and comprise a solution of a ketone peroxide, prepared from an aliphatic ketone containing up to 8 carbon atoms, in water and such an amount of an inert hydrophilic solvent comprising a C3- 12 alkanol, an "alkylene glycol" containing up to 12 carbon atoms, a monoethylene or diethylene glycol mono-alkyl ether in which the alkyl group contains from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or a cyclic amide, or more than one such solvent, that the composition is "safe." The term "safe" is defined in terms of results obtained in a pressure vessel test and a lead pipe deformation test, and of flash point, ignition and burning rate and impact sensitivity. The term "alkylene glycol" is defined to include polyalkylene glycols, cycloalkyl diols and unsaturated aliphatic diols. Diluents other than the hydrophilic solvents which may be present include various phthalate esters and reaction products of ethylene oxide and an alkyl phenol. It is preferred that the ketone peroxides be prepared by the method of Specification 1,050,841. The term "safe" is defined in terms of results obtained in a pressure vessel test and a lead pipe deformation test, and of flash point, ignition and burning rate and impact sensitivity. The term "alkylene glycol" is defined to include polyalkylene glycols, cycloalkyl diols and unsaturated aliphatic diols. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 827,511.
