Abstract

107,258. Vernier, C. June 29, 1916. Couplings.-In electric conductor joints of the kind having a loosely surrounding tube of insulating material and which are supported in a joint box filled with molten insulating compound, the insulating tube is provided with an inner metal lining electrically connected to the conductor, and, if desired, an outer metal tube connected to the joint box or earth. The invention is shown in Fig. 4 as applied to the expansion joint described in Specification 12146/09. The insulating tube a is preferably formed by winding a paper tube tightly around the inner metal tube and impregnating with insulating oil under vacuum so as to exclude all air from between the tubes. The outer tube f may be of the same length or longer than the tube a, and both tubes f , d may be belled out at their ends. In a modification, the outer tube is perforated or made of gauze or made in the form of a tube sufficiently thick to contact with both the tube a and the joint box. Intermediate metal tubes may be inserted between the metal tubes f, d. The invention is shown also as applied to the soldered braid joint described in Specification 15413/09.
