A reactor for converting fertile material into fissionable material having a conversion ratio r, and having a ratio at time t after the start of operation, of fissionable material to fertile material of R(t) and having an enrichment E(t) at said time t, E(t) being defined by the equation is characterized by that r=1 - E(o), where E(o) and R(o) being respectively the magnitudes of E(t) and R(t) at the start of the operation. These operating characteristics enable the reactor core to have a high initial enrichment of fissionable isotopes and thereby a long life.
