Abstract
1,071,796. Making universal joints; assembling force fits. W. SCHAEFFLER, and G. SCHAEFFLER, [trading as INDUSTRIEWERK SCHAEFFLER oHG.]. Sept. 15, 1964 [Sept. 19, 1963], No. 37637/64. Headings B3A and B3U. In a method of assembling universal joints the spider trunnions are introduced into the the bores of the shaft forks 7, 8 and the two shafts 5, 6 are clamped in arms 2 fixed to an upright 1 so that their axes are exactly aligned. The bearings are introduced into the bores and pressed thereinto by rams 11 on to abutments on the spider trunnions. The rams advance in synchronism, but this may be discontinued in the end positions. The shafts are preferably aligned by a manually operated linkage which advances sleeves on the rams 11 into the bores in the forks 7, 8. Two separate linkages are provided and each is connected to an opposed pair of rams (Fig. 2, not shown).
