Abstract

In an aircraft in which the lift of a wing is varied by directing the efflux from a gas-turbine engine over at least one surface of the wing, an engine 11 is mounted by supports 12 from the leading edge of an aerofoil 10, formed at its trailing edge with a pivoted flap and/or aileron 23. The exhaust nozzle 14 of the engine opens into the throat of an annular shroud 18, formed at its trailing edges with hinged flaps 26, whereby the jet efflux may be directed to flow in contact with the upper surface of the wing, thereby accelerating the air-flow and increasing the lift, or directing it to flow upwardly away from the wing thereby reducing lift. The engine acts as an ejector pump by drawing air through the annular space between shroud 18 and engine 11 and further air may be drawn through a slot 33 between the rear end of shroud 18 and the leading edge of aerofoil 10. In an alternative embodiment Fig.3, (not shown), the axis of the engine is below the chord of the aerofoil, which is formed with a slot (46) extending rearwardly from the lower to the upper surface and opening from the throat of a shroud (43), a pivoted flap (48) being adjustable to allow a gas flow through slot (46) and over the rear upper surface of the aerofoil, or directly through shroud (43) to flow over the rear lower surface.
