Abstract

Steel surfaces are coated by brushing, dipping or spraying Zn or Zn alloy powder dispersed in a liquid e.g. water, white spirit, xylene or methyl ethyl ketone, and heating the surface to evaporate the liquid melt the Zn and form a dry coating. The surface may be heated to 550-650 DEG C. in air or nitrogen. The dispersion may contain pigment extenders BaSO4, CaCO3 or red iron oxide, a quaternary ammonium compound as surfactant, Na silicate as binding agent and borax or a fluoride flux. The steel is first derusted and degreased. missing p. 264
