1,071,616. Ultrasonic transducers. SOCIETE ALSACIENNE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ATOMIQUES DE TELECOMMUNICATIONS ET D'ELECTRONIQUE " ALCATEL." Aug. 4, 1964 [Aug, 2, 1963], No. 31433/64. Heading H4J. A composite ultrasonic vibrator comprises piezoelectric ceramic discs 1, 1<SP>1</SP> clamped between additional masses 3, 4 by a prestressing rod 5 arranged such that the junctions between adjacent surfaces are non-attenuative with respect to ultrasonic vibrations passing therethrough. Mass 4 has a surface in contact with a concentrator 9, a screw 8 ensuring a non- attenuative junction with respect to ultrasonic vibrations. The mass 4 has a portion of smaller crosssectional area than that of the discs 1, 1<SP>1</SP> and is of material of characteristic impedance not more than 15 x 10<SP>6</SP> MKS units. It is preferably of metal of specific gravity not greater than 4À5 gm./c.c., e.g. aluminium or magnesium or an alloy thereof. Masses 3, 4 and the rod 5 are at earth potential. A brass disc 2 interposed between the discs 1,1<SP>1</SP> applies a high potential and acts as a cooling fin.
