Abstract
<PICT:1071555/C1/1> <PICT:1071555/C1/2> Glass sheets are bent and tempered by heating to softening point, then establishing different temperatures on opposite surfaces, and finally chilling rapidly to cause warping. The sheet is fed on rollers 21 through a furnace 10 heated by burners 22, 23, heating of the upper surface being to a higher temperature than the under-surface to cause bowing. The rollers at the exit side of the furnace run at a greater speed and feed the sheet to the primary cooling section 11 where pairs of elongated nozzles 26, 27 direct cooling air on to the upper surface of the ends of the sheet, causing slight upward bending of the ends which is subsequently eliminated. The sheet then passes between blower heads 32, 33 directing streams of cooling air from nozzles or slots 37 across the sheet, the pressure and the volume from the upper head being greater than from the lower so causing differential cooling and bowing. The last few of the conveying rollers in the section are under the control of a photo-electric cell 41 or like device which slows them down before delivering the sheet to the final cooling sections, and then returns them to their former speed.
