Abstract
A solution of a polyurethane is prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a polyhydroxyl compound and at the commencement of or during the reaction, adding an organic solvent which contains water present up to 1%, the ratio of NCO : OH groups being such that a reaction product having free NCO groups results, and when the NCO content is constant, adding an organic solvent containing water present in amount up to 20% of the solution. In a modification a solvent which contains water present up to 1% may be added to one component of the polyisocyanate polyaddition process and the other components added successively. In a typical Example (1) polypropylene glycol was reacted with 4:41-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and a solution of N-methyl diethanolamine in acetone containing 0.22% water then added and heated. After two hours more acetone containing 3% water was added.
