Abstract

A hollow member closed at the bottom is disposed below the surface of a body of liquid (e.g. in a swimming bath) in consequence of which it fills with liquid, and a float member within it rises until its upper edge is above the level of the body of liquid. When suction is applied to a pipe at the bottom of the hollow member, the float member sinks until more liquid enters the hollow member by passing over the lip of the float and flowing down a passage within it; the flowing liquid carries debris with it. The debris collects on a loose plate spaced from the bottom of the hollow member, the liquid passing inwards through a hollow cylindrical filter element secured to the plate and passing downwards through a hole in the plate to the suction pipe. In another embodiment the plate is replaced by a cup. In both cases the float member is preferably a sliding fit in the hollow member.
