Abstract
1,071,116. Plate heat exchangers. A.P.V. CO. Ltd. Nov. 15, 1965 [Dec. 10, 1964], No 50390/64. Heading F4S. The pressure drop in a plate heat exchanger using a steam or vapour heating medium is decreased by about half when alternate spacings between adjacent corrugated plates 1, 2, 3 are increased by about 40% relative to the intervening spacings. The desired spacing is maintained by pips 6, 7 and 8, 9, the pips 6 on plates 1, 3 and 8 on plate 2 being increased in depth, thus increasing the minimum distance d 2 between the plates 1, 2 over that d 1 between the plates 2, 3. In another embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) the spacing is increased by increasing the depth of pips (10) at the peaks of the plate (2) and pips (11) at the troughs of plates (1), (3). Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) illustrate a further embodiment wherein each corrugation is formed from alternate transverse and oblique sections (12), (13) the latter or alternate plates abutting, pips (17) at the cross-over points providing the increased spacing, Fig. 6 (not shown). In every embodiment, one of the parts of the heat exchanger plate is enlarged to accommodate the required throughput of steam or vapour.
