Abstract

1,070,819. Reconstituting tobacco. BROWN & WILLIAMSON TOBACCO CORPORATION.. Aug. 19, 1965, No. 35714/65. Heading A2C. A method for making reconstituted tobacco products in which water and finely-divided tobacco elements are made into a mixture and the mixture is formed into a predetermined configuration such as a sheet or rod and then dried, comprises the steps of flash freezing the configuration before drying by subjecting it to a temperature substantially lower than the freezing point of water so that the configuration is rapidly set and drying the configuration in its frozen condition by subjecting it to a temperature below the freezing point of the mixture and to a reduced pressure at which water is sublimed from the solid to the vapour state. The reduced pressure under which the configuration is dried is less than approximately 5mm. Hg absolute. Sheet configurations are cast on a belt before freezing whilst rod configurations may be formed by extruding a tobacco slurry, casting it, or moulding it to the required shape. Longitudinal air channels 17 may be made in the rod 16 by e.g. wires, before freezing. The rod may be formed in cigarette or cigar lengths or cut into such lengths, and provided with a filter and wrapped in the usual manner after drying.
