Abstract
1,070,779. Analogue-to-digital converters. HAWKER SIDDELEY DYNAMICS Ltd. Dec. 2, 1965 [Nov. 20, 1964], No. 47443/64. Heading G4H. An analogue-to-digital converter is calibrated by entering in a register a digital signal corresponding to each error to be corrected and the contents of the register are converted to analogue form and used as a correction signal. The zero corrector (25, Fig. 3, not shown) comprises an auxiliary analogue-to-digital converter consisting of a control circuit (27), a digital store (26) and a series of switches (28) each switching a weighted resistor (29) into circuit to provide a correction signal to the amplifier (19). To set the correction circuit the input (20) is opencircuited and the switches (15) of the feedback loop of the main converter are opened. Relay (35) is energized to close contacts (36), connecting the input to zero volts. The error signal from the comparator is then reduced to zero by the correction converter (25). A similar auxiliary converter is provided to balance the current input to the amplifier, to obtain a null comparator output when the input is opencircuited. There is also provision for making an automatic full-scale calibration. For this purpose a third auxiliary analogue-to-digital converter is provided which, when a standard calibration signal is applied to the main converter and the corresponding digital value entered in the register, controls the reference supply source to bring the error signal to zero.
