Abstract

An ointment base, particularly for ophthalmic use comprises an intimate mixture of yellow soft paraffin (30-70% by weight) liquid paraffin (25-70%) and polyethylene (0.1-5%). Preferably, it is made by a process involving a "quick cooling" step, e.g. the polyethylene and at least some of the mineral oil are intermixed at 80-120 DEG C. and "quick-cooled" before being mixed with the remaining ingredients. Medicaments may be incorporated into the base e.g. anti-inflammatory agents such as triamcinolone acetonide or 6a -fluoro-triamcinolane acetonide; bactericidal agents e.g. neomycin or gramicidin; and surface anaesthetics e.g. proparacaine hydrochloride.
