Abstract
<PICT:1069605/C6-C7/1> An anode assembly comprises a horizontally-extending graphite anode plate 9; a graphite conductor member 1 impregnated throughout with a wax, for instance hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon which is solid at the working temperature of the cell, e.g. hexachlorobenzene, or a resin, e.g. polyester resin and terminating in a bore in the upper surface of said anode plate 9; a cylindrical metal conductor terminating in a bore in the upper surface of the graphite conductor member 1 and extending upwardly therefrom, the walls of the bore of the member 1 being coated with solderable material and the metal conductor being fixed thereto by means of a fusible metal or metal alloy solder; and a sleeve of titanium having a cylindrical section 6 closely surrounding the upwardly extending portion of the metal conductor, and a flange 7 at its lower end, which flanged portion 7 is sealed to the upper rim of the graphite conductor member 1 by an interposed layer of sealing material 8 and a bonding agent and may be encircled by a titanium clip (12) Fig. 2 (not shown). The metal conductor may comprise a steel lower portion 2 and a copper rod 4. Resilient membranes 3 and (10) Fig. 2 (not shown) may be positioned between the metal conductor and graphite conductor 1, and between the conductor 1 and anode block 9 respectively.
