Abstract

1,069,398. Instrument for biopsy. A. S. GIDLUND. Sept. 20, 1965 [Oct. 29, 1964], No. 40042/65. Heading A5R. Apparatus for taking a sample of the mucous membrane of the stomach comprises a sampling member 1, 2 which is inserted into the stomach through the patient's gullet and is able to shear off a part of the membrane, the member being attached by two concentric plastic hoses to an operating member (Figure 3, not shown), so that isotonic sodium chloride solution can be pumped into the member 1, 2 through the inner hose, a tube 6, and apertures 17 to wash the sample of membrane out of the patient through the outer hose. As in the sampling member illustrated, by moving handles on the operating member and causing relative movement of the two hoses, the two parts 1, 2 are brought together to perform the shearing action and teeth are provided on the member 3 which fit tightly over the member 2. In an alternative embodiment, Figure 4 (not shown), needles on the sampling member hold this member to the stomach membrane during the operation of the apparatus. The apparatus is also suitable for use in the bowel.
