Abstract

<PICT:1069002/C4-C5/1> Combustible gas having a heating value in the range 200-1000 B.Th.U. per cu. ft. is produced by injecting a liquid petroleum feed hydrocarbon as a vapour or as an atomized liquid, into hot oxygen-free combustion gases in a hollow cracking-tube at a temperature below 2000 DEG F., preferably between 800 DEG and 1500 DEG F. The heating gases are preferably derived by partial combustion, i.e. between 3 and 15% combustion, of the hydrocarbon feed with a stoichiometric quantity of oxygen in a burner preceding the cracking zone. The feed may be a petroleum fraction having an endpoint up to 750 DEG F. and containing 70-100% by volume of saturated C4-C10 hydrocarbons and less than 30% aromatics and olefines. Examples are light and heavy naphtha, commercial kerosine, straight-run gasoline and mixtures thereof. At one end of horizontal cracking tube 10 is disposed burner 14 and at the other, condenser-cooler 11. Hydrocarbon fuel stored in tank 16 is pumped to the burner and to fuel atomizing nozzles 15 through leads 17, 18 respectively, the nozzles 15 being directed into the end of the cracking tube immediately adjacent to the combustion chamber of the burner, and cracked gas is cooled by oil or water in spray condenser 11, spray medium and condensible fractions of the gas collecting at 96 and combustible gas containing hydrocarbon gas, nitrogen and less than 30% hydrogen being withdrawn through duct 104.
