Abstract

Apparatus for compression-crimping yarn of the type having feed rolls, a compression crimping chamber, and a wheel to convey the plug of crimped yarn through an arcuate setting chamber - i.e. of the type described in Specification 1,051,721 - has means to produce a variably crimped yarn. These means may comprise variable speed control means which vary periodically and either continuously or intermittently the speed of the feed rolls and/or the wheel and/or the yarn withdrawal means. Alternatively or in addition the means may be formed by the periphery of the wheel having teeth of varying sizes, gaps of varying sizes between the teeth, or portions alternatively roughened - as by serrations or knurling - and polished, so that the grip of the wheel on the plug of yarn at the exit of the crimping chamber - and thus rate of movement of the plug - varies periodically, to produce a variably crimped yarn.
