Abstract

1,068,480. Measuring weight electrically. W. & T. AVERY Ltd. Dec.13, 1965 [Dec.11, 1964], No. 50496/64. Headings G1N and G1W. To counteract the effect of atmospheric pressure on weight measurements, a weighing apparatus comprises a platform 8 (Fig. 2) supported on four hermetically sealed strain gauge load cells one under each corner thereof, two load cells 10 (12) being loaded in tension and the other two 9 (11) loaded in compression. The cells are each sealed from the atmosphere by a flexible diaphragm. Changes in pressure will act equally on the cells, and increasing pressure will increase the load on the cells 9 (11) in compression and will decrease the load in the cells 10 (12) in tension. The cells are electrically connected to summate their output whereby the effect of atmospheric pressure is cancelled out. Each tensioned load cell 10 (12) has its upper end fixed to an oval plate supported by columns 17 on a base 5, while its bottom end is fixed to an oval plate 19 the ends of which are loaded by two vertical supports 20 connected to the platform through self aligning ball units 4 and a connecting plate 21. It is suggested that the load cells may be fluid pressure type.
