Abstract

1,068,139. Boring bars. MADISON INDUSTRIES Inc. Jan. 24, 1966 [June 30, 1965], No. 3029/66. Heading B3C. An adjustable boring tool (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises a bar (10), a bushing (15) non- rotatably seated in a bore (11) in the bar (10), a collet (18) seated within the bushing (15) and a cylindrical tool (26) adapted to be gripped by the collet (18) under the action of spring washers (30) which bear against a shoulder (29) on the bushing and against a retaining plate (35) fixed to the end of the tool (26). The collet (18) may be rotated by means of a hexagonal portion (20) to adjust the axial position of the tool (26) which is prevented from rotating by lugs (33, 34) on the retaining plate which register in a slot (32) in the bushing. The tool itself may be formed as a collet to receive a detachable cutting bit. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown) the collet is received directly in a bore in the boring bar without an intermediate bushing.
