Compound or multi-stage piston pumps; revolving-cylinder pumps; radial-cylinder pumps. - In air-compressors, a cylinder is provided with a principal piston and an auxiliary piston independently movable therein, the auxiliary piston forcing a supplementary charge into the compression chamber, and the prin. cipal piston compressing the combined engaging bowls 8 on rods 7 connected to the pistons 6. Each piston 6 is provided with a cup-leather, draws in air from the crank-end of the cylinder, and forces it through valves 15 to the other end of the cylinder, the principal piston drawing in air through inlet valves 16 and forcing it, after main and supplementary charges to delivery, whereby an augmented compression is obtained. In the form of pump illustrated, a number of cylinders I are arranged to rotate round a fixed shaft 5 having a common crankpin 4 to operate the principal pistons 2, the auxiliary pistons 6 being operated by means of cams 9 or equivalents compression, through valves 17 to delivery, or to a high-compression cylinder 12, of which the piston 13 is connected by its rod to the principal piston. A further compression cylinder may be employed. The cylinders may be stationary, in which case the shaft 5 and the cams 9 rotate.
