Abstract

1,067,313. Welding by pressure; making chains. ESAB Ltd. Aug. 14, 1964 [Aug. 15, 1963], No. 33173/64. Headings B3A and B3R. A device for moving coupled chain links to a welding station comprises means for engaging a link positioned before the welding station, means for moving the link engaging means to position this link at the welding station and means for withdrawing the link engaging means from the welding station after the link has been clamped at the welding station. A welding machine comprises two spaced apart guides 11 along which the coupled links 25 and 26 are guided to a flash- or butt-welding station 12. A link engaging means 13 comprises two plates separated by a distance piece and shaped to fit on each side of a link, pivoted to a support 22 and biased by a spring 16 against a stop 23 on the support. The support 22 is movable parallel to the guides by an hydraulic cylinder 15. Beyond the welding station the chain passes over a driven brake wheel. A link 14 at the welding station is gripped by clamps and the link engaging means 13 is moved in the direction B a distance equal to two chain links. During this movement the means 13 pivots against the action of the spring 16 and then moves in to engage another link. Alternate links are welded and the chain is then passed through the machine again for the remaining links to be welded.
