Abstract

Impure copper such as molten blister and/or scrap copper is refined by continuously casting it into a strip, cutting the strip into lengths to form electrode plates having the required superficial area, preferably of at least 8 square feet (0.74 square metres), immersing the plates in an electrolyte solution e.g. acidified CuSO4 and electrolytically refining, e.g. by connecting the unrefined electrodes in parallel as anodes and interleaving with pure copper cathodes or arranging the unrefined electrodes in series so that copper from one electrode is dissolved in solution and deposited on another electrode. Holes or notches by which the unrefined electrode can be suspended may be punched in the strip being cut or in the cut lengths.
