A machine for spreading powdered or granular material comprises a hopper 12. from which material is fed, through open ings 17, 19 in adjustable walls 16, 18, to a centrifugal distributer 13 mounted on a shaft 14 which shaft carries an agitator. 30 formed from a single length of spring steel rod and wound on the shaft to form a helical portion 31 of constant radius and a conical portion 35- theradius of which increases as it approaches the wall 18. A cam 39 is mounted on the shaft 14 and operates a further agitator 40 oneend of which is mounted on the wall of the hopper 12.
